Private Party Equipment Loans Explained
By Diane, PBC Finance
“The bank said they don’t do private party.” I’ve heard that sentence more times than I can count. Somebody finds a great truck from a retiring owner-operator, or a loader from a contractor who’s downsizing, and the first place they call turns them away because there’s no dealer involved.
That’s a shame, because some of the best equipment deals out there come straight from individuals. Private party deals are one of my favorite things to work on. PBC Finance is a broker, not a lender, and in 30 years I’ve built up a feel for which lenders are comfortable with these deals and how to put them together the right way.
What a Private Party Equipment Loan Is
It’s financing for a truck, trailer or machine you’re buying directly from another person or business instead of a dealership. The lender pays the seller (or pays off the seller’s existing loan), and you make payments to the lender, the same as you would on a dealer purchase.
The difference is that with no dealer in the middle, nobody is handling the paperwork, checking the title or standing behind the equipment. That’s why lenders look a little harder at these deals, and why it helps to have someone who has done it many times.
Why I Like Private Party Purchases
- Room to negotiate. There’s no dealer markup, so the price is often more flexible.
- Real history. You can usually talk to the person who actually ran and maintained the equipment.
- More to choose from. There are lots of trucks, trailers and machines out there that never touch a dealer lot.
- Flexible timing. Individual sellers can sometimes work around your schedule.
Why Some Finance Companies Steer Clear
Private sales carry risks that a dealer normally handles behind the scenes:
- Title problems. Is the seller really the owner? Is the title clean?
- Existing liens. The seller may still owe money on the equipment.
- Scams. Fake listings exist, especially online.
- Unknown condition. No dealer has inspected or reconditioned it.
None of these kill a deal. They just have to be handled properly.
How I Walk a Private Party Deal Through
Every deal is a little different, but it usually goes like this:
- You find the equipment and agree on a price with the seller.
- You apply. Fill out a credit application and send me the details: year, make, model, hours or mileage, serial number or VIN, and the price.
- I shop it to lenders I know are open to private party sales.
- Verification. The seller’s identity, ownership and title are confirmed, and existing liens are checked.
- Condition check. Some lenders want an inspection, photos or other proof of condition.
- Paperwork and funding. You and the seller sign a bill of sale, any lien gets paid off, the seller gets paid and the title moves over with the new lender listed.
Shellie and I keep both you and the seller in the loop, so nobody is left wondering what happens next.
How to Protect Yourself as the Buyer
I always tell my clients:
- Look at the title early. The name should match the seller.
- Ask about liens. A seller who still owes money isn’t a problem, but the loan has to be paid off as part of the sale.
- Get it inspected. Especially if you can’t see it run yourself.
- Never wire money to a seller you don’t know before the deal is verified.
- Put everything in writing. A clear bill of sale protects both of you.
