Equipment Financing With Less-Than-Perfect Credit
By Diane, PBC Finance
Let me start with something I wish more people heard: a rough patch on your credit doesn’t make you a bad person or a bad businessperson. I’ve talked with a lot of hardworking truckers and contractors over 30 years whose credit took a hit from a divorce, a medical bill, a slow season or a business that didn’t work out.
If that’s you, don’t give up before you pick up the phone. PBC Finance is an equipment finance broker, not a lender. Shellie and I work with many lenders, and they don’t all look at credit the same way. That gives us room to look for a fit.
An honest caveat: I can’t promise approval, and I won’t. Every lender has its own guidelines, and less-than-perfect credit can mean fewer options, more money down or different terms. But it doesn’t always mean no.
Why “No” From One Place Isn’t the Final Word
When a bank turns you down, it’s often because you don’t fit their box. Other lenders have different boxes. Some specialize in borrowers who are rebuilding credit; others weigh experience or collateral more heavily. Part of my job is knowing which lenders tend to be open to which situations.
What Can Help Offset Credit Challenges
In my experience, these are the things that can strengthen a file when the credit isn’t spotless:
- A larger down payment. Money down lowers the lender’s risk and shows commitment.
- Strong bank statements. Steady deposits and no overdrafts say a lot about how you run things today.
- Industry experience. Years in the seat count.
- Time in business. A business that’s been running a while has a track record.
- Good equipment. A truck or machine with solid value makes the collateral stronger.
- Work lined up. Contracts or a steady carrier relationship help.
- Additional collateral or a co-signer, in some cases. Talk to me before you go this route, because it puts someone else on the line too.
Tell the Story Behind the Score
I always tell my clients: don’t hide the bumps. Lenders are going to see your credit report anyway. A short, honest explanation of what happened, why it happened and what’s changed since can make a real difference. “I had a medical emergency, fell behind, and I’ve been current ever since” reads a lot better than silence.
I’ll help you put that explanation together the right way.
Be Realistic About the First Deal
If your credit is bruised, your first deal may not be your dream deal. You might need to:
- Put more money down
- Choose a slightly less expensive truck or machine
- Accept a shorter or different structure
- Start with one piece of equipment instead of several
That’s okay. A deal you can handle, paid on time, builds the track record that opens better doors next time.
Steps You Can Take Right Now
- Pull your credit report and dispute any errors.
- Get current on anything that’s behind, if you can.
- Pay down revolving balances where possible.
- Avoid new credit right before you apply.
- Build up your down payment.
- Keep your business bank account clean for a few months.
Watch Out for Too-Good-to-Be-True Offers
Folks with credit challenges can be targets for bad actors. Be careful with anyone who guarantees approval no matter what or asks for large upfront fees before anything happens. Ask questions, read everything and take your time.
