Equipment Financing for Start-Up Trucking Companies

  • Equipment Financing for Start-Up Trucking Companies

    By Diane, PBC Finance

There’s a certain sound in someone’s voice when they call to say they’re finally ready to go out on their own. They’re excited, a little nervous, and almost always worried about one thing: “Will anyone finance me if my business is brand new?”

I’m happy to say that at PBC Finance, start-ups are considered. We’re a broker, not a lender. In 30 years I’ve helped plenty of new trucking businesses get their first truck, and I’ll tell you what I’ve learned about how it works and how to get ready.

Why New Businesses Get Looked at Differently

An established company has years of revenue, tax returns and payment history for a lender to study. A start-up doesn’t have that yet, so lenders lean on other things:

    • Your personal credit
    • Your experience driving or running equipment
    • Your down payment
    • Your plan for finding work
    • The equipment you want to buy

That isn’t a dead end. It just means your application has to tell your story well, and it has to land in front of lenders that actually work with new businesses. That’s my job.

What I See Lenders Focus On

    Your Experience

Time behind the wheel matters. If you’ve held a CDL and driven professionally, or run dump trucks or heavy equipment for someone else, that tells a lender you know the work. I always ask about it, and I make sure it shows up in your file.

    Your Personal Credit

With no business credit yet, your personal credit carries more weight. There’s no single score every lender requires; it varies. A clean, current payment history helps.

    Money Down

A down payment shows you have skin in the game, and it lowers the lender’s risk. How much you’ll need depends on your overall picture and the lender.

    Where the Work Comes From

Do you have a lease-on agreement with a carrier? A contract with a contractor? Steady loads from a freight broker? Anything that shows where the money will come from helps.

    A Sensible Truck

A reliable truck at a fair price is easier to finance. Really old or worn-out equipment can limit your options when you’re new.

Getting Your Start-Up Ready, Step by Step

    1. Set up the business. Pick a structure, open a business bank account, and get your registrations in order if you’ll run under your own authority.
    2. Check your credit. Pull your report, fix errors and pay balances down where you can.
    3. Save a down payment, plus some reserves for insurance, repairs and slow weeks.
    4. Line up work before you buy.
    5. Choose your equipment, whether it’s from a dealer, an auction or a private seller.
    6. Apply through a broker. One application, and I shop it to multiple lenders.

The Costs Nobody Puts in the Brochure

I always tell new owner-operators that the truck payment is just the start. Plan for:

    • Commercial truck insurance
    • Fuel
    • Maintenance and tires
    • Permits, registrations and compliance
    • Downtime between loads

Lenders like to see that you’ve thought about these, and so will your bank account.

How Shellie and I Help New Businesses

    • Free quotes, so it costs you nothing to find out your options.
    • Fast callbacks. You’re building a business and can’t afford to sit and wait.
    • Many lenders, one application, including lenders open to start-ups.
    • Private party deals, if your first truck comes from another owner-operator.
    • The extra mile. We take the time to understand your plan and present it well.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get truck financing with no business history?
Yes, start-ups are considered. Lenders will look more closely at your personal credit, experience, down payment and plans for work.

Do I need my own authority before I apply?
Not necessarily. Some new owner-operators lease onto a carrier, and others run under their own authority. Lenders view each path differently, so let’s talk about your plan.

How much do I need down?
It depends on your credit, experience, the equipment and the lender. I’ll give you a clearer picture once I’ve seen your application.

What size deals do you work on?
Equipment financing from $25,000 to $5 million.

    Is PBC Finance the lender?
No. We’re a broker. We work with many lenders to find your fit, and the lender makes the final decision.
